Around this time each year, we remember the infamous January 22, 1973, Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision, which condemned 65 million preborn humans in the United States to death by abortion. Although Roe was overturned, abortion remains a top issue today.
It has long been and continues to be promoted as a mere “choice.” Pro-choice is a colossal misnomer. Those who claim to be pro-choice are actually pro-abortion.
Although proponents say they are “pro-choice,” much research indicates the majority of women who have had an abortion have felt compelled to have the procedure.
In a recent radio segment featuring Eric Scheidler, from the Pro-Life Action League, based in Illinois, he said, “When someone tells me now that they’re ‘pro-choice,’ I say, ‘I’m glad to hear that because everyone should have the right to choose to become a parent.’ Then we get into the question of women having a right to motherhood taken away from them by those who are pushing abortion on them.”
Scheidler says it includes boyfriends, politicians, parents, employers, and the abortion industry.
Recently, Dr. Ingrid Skop wrote, “It is usually assumed that most women in the U.S. freely choose abortion and consider it to have been the best decision for them, all things considered. However, an expanding body of literature class this assumption into question.”
“A recent peer-reviewed study conducted by [Charlotte Lozier Institute] scholars found that only one-third of abortions are ‘wanted.’ Nearly one in four described their abortion as ‘unwanted’ or ‘coerced.’ An additional 43% described the abortion as ‘accepted’ but ‘inconsistent with their values and preferences,’” continued Skop.
“A majority, around 60%, said their preference would have been to give birth had they received more emotional support or had greater financial security. …In another 2023 peer-reviewed survey, 61% of women reported “high levels” of pressure to abort,” she added.
Let’s hear it for choice. As was once declared by D. James Kennedy, Ph.D., “The only ‘choice’ the abortionists ever give anybody is ‘Tuesday or Friday? When do you want to have the abortion?’”
In the meantime, there are many crisis pregnancy centers doing the work of the Lord and providing loving options for women seeking abortions. They are the ones providing the genuine choice.
However, these crisis pregnancy centers are frequently targeted by extremists in the pro-abortion arena. One example is on June 7, 2022, the Compass Care crisis pregnancy center, located in Amherst, New York, was firebombed, causing $500,000 in damages.
Reverend Jim Harden, president of CompassCare, speaking on the destruction of the center and abortion-related issues, said, “It is telling that a recent study revealed that nearly 70% of women are coerced to abort their babies. …When a woman faces an unplanned pregnancy, she considers abortion because she feels trapped…like she has no choice. Mercenary abortionists masquerade as medical professionals to profiteer from this tragic reality.”
But, Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has audaciously claimed that these crisis pregnancy centers are “harmful” to women.
“Yet pro-life pregnancy centers help a woman with everything but abortion…for free. Pro-life pregnancy centers are the abortion industry’s only competition, delivering up to 2 million women nearly $358 million worth of free medical care and support every year,” continued Rev. Harden.
“And while pro-abortion politicians get reelected on the coattails of abortion propaganda, it is the pro-life pregnancy centers that are empowering women with true informed consent and support,” said Harden.
Through the Lord, there is forgiveness and healing for women who have had an abortion, either by choice or otherwise.
“In my years in practice, I have never met a woman who has expressed regret over giving birth to her baby, but I have met plenty who shared their regret for having abortions,” said Dr. Vivina Napier.
Katie Daniel of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America says, “There is an abortion industry that makes billions of dollars killing children and hurting their moms, and that is who we’re up against. So, we need to speak clearly and honestly about that reality while contrasting our compassion for moms and babies.”
The founders of our nation declared independence from Great Britain along with a dependence on God. They said that our Creator has endowed us with inalienable rights. The first is the right to life.
Genuine choice is overwhelmingly American. But “pro-choice” only allows one option — an appalling one. America can and should do better.
