Opinion: The Best Protection Against Crime is Integrity When Applying the Law

The Democratic Party, along with some of the Republican old guard, has decided former President Donald Trump is the devil and is willing to take down every law in the country to get to him.

It began in 2016 with the meritless accusations that Trump had somehow “colluded” with Russia to win the 2016 presidential election. The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) lied several times to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance (FISA) court to get federal warrants to spy on the former president and his advisers.

The Justice Department launched an investigation that lasted several years, based on “evidence” that they already knew was false “opposition research” commissioned and paid for by the 2016 presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton. Despite over $30 million in taxpayer dollars, the “investigation” produced absolutely nothing.

However, Donald Trump’s enemies have not let up. He was impeached and acquitted twice by the House of Representatives.

Democrat Alvin Bragg, Manhattan District Attorney, tried to prosecute Trump for “falsifying of business records” despite the expiration of the appropriate statute of limitations and no evidence of anything that could make the alleged behavior a felony.

Letitia James, Democrat New York Attorney General, filed an action for civil fraud against the former president and alleged he undervalued his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida when applying for business loans. James wants to confiscate all of Trump’s properties in New York and cancel his business licenses.

The judge presiding over the case, Arthur Engoron, is determined to help her do it. Pre-trial, Engoron ruled that Trump had committed fraud. During the trial, Engoron has intentionally ignored defense testimony from several real estate experts supporting the property valuation in Trump’s financial statements, along with that of the lenders themselves, who testified they used their appraisers, were promptly paid back, and weren’t defrauded.

The most recent travesty is the decision by the Colorado Supreme Court to eliminate Trump’s name from the ballot in the state “for his role in the January 6, 2021” protest at the U.S. Capitol. This extremely inappropriate decision doesn’t only exceed the power of the court, according to legal experts on the Right and Left. Still, it is an apparent effort to ignore increasing evidence that undermines the narrative of the Left that the January 6 protests were an “insurrection” that was “instigated” by Trump, an accusation Trump has not been criminally charged with, and for which the Senate acquitted him in his second impeachment hearing.

The minimum 4-3 majority vote by the Colorado Supreme Court has disqualified Trump’s candidacy, who has the support of almost 70% of his party and increasing support from other constituencies. The disenfranchisement of Colorado voters and interference with a federal election is a glaring overstep.

If one believes Trump or his enemies are the devil, the most significant protection against unlawful conduct is integrity when applying the laws.

When law enforcement is compromised, discarded, or diluted — even in pursuing a lofty goal — doers of wrong profit while the public continues to suffer.

We have already seen in cities and states that have eliminated cash bail, refused to enforce immigration and theft laws, or looked the other way when the left-wing mobs burn, steal, and destroy. We see it play out on college campuses nationwide and at our southern border. Antisocial behavior and crime increase because those who are engaging in that behavior know they can inflict damage without any repercussions to them.

What is being inflicted on Donald Trump is part of the same pattern.

If the gatekeepers of the U.S. legal system succeed in efforts to “cut down all the laws” of the country to shoot down their latest “devil,” we will all pay a horrific price.
